Dr. Robert Puig, PT, DPT

The Puig name has meant quality care in the Rio Grande Valley for more than 60 years.

That legacy started with Dr. Puig's mother, Bertha Puig, the first female physical therapist in the Rio Grande Valley, and it continues today in a set of outpatient orthopedic clinics built on one principle: the patient comes first.

 

Dr. Robert Puig helped create and expand those clinics across the Valley, growing a family practice into a regional standard of care without losing what made it worth trusting in the first place.

Education and Training

 

Dr. Puig completed his undergraduate education at St. Mary's University, then was accepted into the master's program in physical therapy at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio.

 

He went on to earn his Doctor of Physical Therapy at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania, one of only 14 doctoral physical therapy programs in the United States at the time. He graduated with highest honors in 2003.

 

That same spring, the faculty of Widener's Institute for Physical Therapy Education presented him with the Clinical Excellence Award, in recognition of demonstrated excellence in clinical education. He also completed Widener's graduate program in Health and Medical Services Administration, earning a Certificate in Health Care Management.

 

Dr. Puig was then recruited into a post-doctoral program with the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine, U.S. at Texas Tech in Lubbock.

Over six years he completed the full course of study and earned his Certification in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) of the Spine in 2011, following written and oral examinations and 135 contact hours of didactic and hands-on coursework covering the cervical spine, cervicothoracic junction, thoracic spine and ribs, lumbar spine, and sacroiliac joint.

Clinical Experience

 

Few therapists in the Valley have practiced across as many settings.

 

Hospital and acute care. Dr. Puig has worked in several Valley hospitals treating orthopedic, neurological, and medical patients, both pre-surgical and post-surgical.

 

Pediatrics. Six years working with involved pediatric patients, the cases that require the most patience and the most precision.

 

Upper extremity orthopedics. Twelve years practicing alongside an outstanding upper extremity orthopedic surgeon at his clinic, a partnership that sharpened his approach to complex post-surgical rehabilitation.

 

That range is the reason a patient walking into a Puig clinic gets a therapist who has seen their condition before, and knows what recovery actually looks like.
